About CETEG

The mission of the Central European Tectonic Groups (CETEG) is to strengthen the professional communication and the coordination of activities of formal groups and individuals from the Central European countries interested in broadly scoped tectonics and geodynamics of the Earth crust. According to the assumed convention, scientific gatherings of CETEG are to be held annually in geologically attractive regions, each year in the different member country.

The Central European Tectonic Group is an open scientific association bringing together the geoscientists with the interest in geodynamic processes of the Earth crust in a broad measure.

The already well-established topics of the annual meetings are related to the structural evolution of the orogenic belts, basin evolution, a relationship of magmatism and tectonics and other subjects, studied by the methods of structural geology, petrology, geochemistry, sedimentology and geophysics.

Main topics of the 2018 Meeting

Special attention will be paid to tectonic problems of the Carpathian-Pannonian region, whereas other topics of primary importance will include the research progress achieved in the Variscan Belt and an understanding of the deep structure of the interface between the Precambrian East European craton and the Palaeozoic orogenic belts of Western Europe (the Teisseyre-Tornquist Line and Trans-European Suture Zone).

Several keynote lectures by top specialists, including - among others - Marek Jarosiński (Polish Geological Institute), Jose Ramon Martinez-Catalan (Universidad de Salamanca), Piotr Krzywiec and Stanislaw Mazur (Polish Academy of Sciences), will provide hints to the main topics of the meeting (more details in the 2nd Circular). Nevertheless, the main body of the conference will consist of ‘ordinary’ contributions, which are heartily welcome and will hopefully cover a very wide scope of structural- and tectonic-related thematic issues. The latter may include e.g. studies on various aspects of the Variscan and Alpine-Carpathian-Dinaridic orogenic belts, theoretical and methodological aspects of structural geology, tectonics, petrology and geochronology, as well as neotectonics and sedimentary basin evolution. Presentations on economic aspects of structural geology and tectonics, notably related to hydrocarbon prospecting, will be welcome as well.

Conference language

Preliminary program

  • 18 April: Pre-conference field trip: "Structural development of the Carpathian orogenic front", illustrated with spectacular underground exposures in the ancient Wieliczka salt mine (leader: Stanisław Burliga).
  • 19th and 20th of April: Scientific sessions, oral and poster presentations
  • 20th of April: The gala dinner and awards ceremony
  • 21st of April: Post-conference field trip: "Structural effects of Miocene transpression at the boundary between the Outer and Central Carpathians as reflected along the southern margin of the Pieniny Klippen Belt" (leaders: Mirosław Ludwiniak, Jan Golonka & Edyta Jurewicz)

Awards

Awards of the CETEG community promote the active participation of outstanding students and young scientists at the CETEG annual meetings.

Best student presentation prize

The prizes for the best student poster and best oral presentation of a young scientist will be awarded during the conference dinner.

Radek Melka prize

The prize has been established by friends of Mr Radek Melka to remember this outstanding young Czech scientist in structural geology who passed away at the age of 30 in 1994. From 2015, the Radek Melka Prize is awarded every second year to the best paper by an author from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, or Hungary of age up to 35 years in the year of publication of their paper. Therefore, it will not be awarded at CETEG 2018.

Publication of abstracts in "Geology, Geophysics & Environment"

The abstracts from the meeting are planned to be published in Geology, Geophysics & Environment, a scientific journal issued on a regular basis by the AGH University of Science and Technology (Cracow). Abstracts up to 1000 words long will be accepted. More information about abstract submission format will be given in the second circular.

Registration Fee

The registration fee will cover all meals during the conference (including conference gala dinner), rental of conference rooms and equipment, coffee breaks and the abstract volume together with field guides. It will not cover the accommodation costs (see below).

Professionals 150 €
Students/retired 100 €

Excursion fee

Pre-conference 35 €
Post-conference 30 €

The excursion fee will cover bus rental costs and those of meal pack/excursion meal for each participant. During the pre-conference excursion, it will also pay the entrance to the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

Conference location and accommodation

All activities related to the conference, including accommodation and the gala dinner, will take place at the hotel "Perła Południa" in Rytro or in its direct neighbourhood.

The village of Rytro is located ca 15 km south of Nowy Sącz, in the Poprad river valley, in the very interior of the Outer Carpathians. Originally a highlanders’ village, it slowly transforms into a holiday resort.

The accommodation for the conference participants is reserved in “Perła Południa” hotel. The price for accommodation is ~30€ /pers/night in double rooms and ~45€ /pers/night in single rooms. Please also note that the hotel accommodation is not included in the registration fee.

Registration & Deadlines

Registration form including abstract submission will be open in early January and will have to be submitted until 15 February 2018.

Payment deadline: 28 February 2018
